Introduction 

উনবিংশ শতাব্দীর এই উপন্যাসটি পড়ার আগে আমরা যদি কিছু বিষয় জেনে নেই তাহলে বুঝতে সুবিধা হবে। কারণ এখানে কাহিনী এগিয়েছে প্রধান চরিত্রের মনস্তাত্ত্বিক অবস্থা বর্ণনায়। কি কি জানতে হবে? 

What is Gothic Novel? 

19th Century in England

 

Gothic Novel

•Gothic Novel involves delusion of persecution of characters,Mysterious and terror atmosphere,Violent and revengeful act.

•Supernatural element.

 

•আমরা দেখি উপন্যাসের প্রধান চরিত্র Heathcliff আর Catherine এর romantic relationship কিভাবে একটা স্বাভাবিক পরিণতি না পেয়ে বরং সম্পূর্ণ কাহিনীটি কেই নিয়ে গেছে একটা revengeful and violent অবস্থায়। 

•Unusual irrationality and compassion over rationality and sense.

  Heathcliff কে Mr. Earnshaw  তার পরিবারে শুধু জায়গা দেয়নি বরং নিজের ছেলের মতোই বড় করেছে, Catherine ও স্বভাবতই তাকে ভালবেসেছে অথচ পুরো ঘটনাতেই হঠাৎ Catherine এর এই বদলে গিয়ে Edgar কেই জীবন সঙ্গি বানানো তারপরেও Heathcliff এর প্রতি তার ভালবাসা সব মিলিয়ে একটু কিন্তু Unusual essence দেয় পাঠককে।

•19th Century তে আমরা Romantic and Victorian এই দুটো সময়ের সাহিত্য দেখতে পারি।

•Good and Evil

•Love and Hate

•Revenge

•Sin and Guilt

•Punishment and Forgiveness

•Identity and Society

•Idealized Women  এই theme গুলো common.তখন আলোচিত ছিল Unparallel Space of wealth between classes, Social Reform, self improvement, ambition , love, loyalty and Justice ছাড়াও use of Gothic element ছিল অন্যতম বৈশিষ্ট। 

 

Industrial Revolution and Economic growth

Invention of Steam engine (একটা বিশাল সংখ্যক মানুষ কিন্তু কৃষি কাজ ছেড়ে manufacturing career এর দিকে ঝুকে যায় এবং জীবিকার খোঁজে গ্রাম থেকে শহরমুখী হয়ে উঠে)

Textile industry গুলো বৃদ্ধি পায়।

পূর্বে England ছিল landlord দের control এ সেখানে হঠাৎ economic change এর কারনে দেখা গেল wealthy businessman রা England কে economically and politically control  করা শুরু করে।

 Skilled labor increases and rise of Middle class is considered as the positive outcome of this revolution.  

Discussion 

•No real hero

Every characters in this novel has been given significant role to carry on with the storyline. Emily Bronte did not create even Heathcliff as a heroic character rather she made him with flaws for the sake of story. We see Heathcliff as a barbarous and rough in nature.

•Life follows a process of change

Living things means it will be changing  and only death makes it stop. The lives in Wuthering Heights shows so much changes by showing ups and downs in their life that seems a bit realistic.

 Social Class 

Here in the novel we see Mr Earnshaw and Linton  having some lands and properties but none of them hold any social status. That time only aristocrats used to have social title.

সমাজে কাদেরকে Gentleman  বলা হবে সেটা নির্ভর করতো তার সম্পদের পরিমান কতো।তার বাড়িতে চাকর বাকর কয়জন এবং তার উপার্জনের উৎস কি। Catherine এর হঠাৎ Edgar কে বিয়ে করার পেছনেও ছিল এটাই কারন যে সে তার প্রতিবেশীদের মধ্যে সবচেয়ে ধনী পরিবারের বউ হতে পারছে।Heathcliff এর খুব কম সময়ে একজন অনাথ গৃহহীন থেকে সম্পদশালী হওয়ার পেছনেও 19th century’s Industrial Revolution is the reason where he could find some suitable job for himself to earn money easily.

Nature VS Culture

The Earnshaw family shows nature in their behaviour. They seemed even closer to the nature whereas the Linton represents culture and refinement.

•Emily Bronte used symbol like

•Moore

  That represents infertile place which cannot be cultivated. Moore represents dark and soggy which is somewhat the negative and wild state of mind.আবার আমরা Heathcliff এর characteristics কেও Nature means Moore এর সাথে তুলনা করতে পারি। যা পরিবর্তন হবার নয়।

Heathcliff কে বলা হয়েছে অনেক ধনী হবার পরেও যে সে শুধুই পোশাক এর মধ্যে Gentleman which means he is same wild and barbarous Heathcliff inside.  

 

•Ghost

The ghost or any supernatural element’s

emergence means superstition and also it presents that  people dwell in past. Present এ থেকেও অনেকে অতীতের স্মৃতি নিয়ে বেঁচে থাকে। past remains alive through memories and tales.

 

Conclusion

Emily Bronte could have presented this romantic love story in a different manner but she chose the style gothic to tell this story where she has depicted the social state and perspective of that contemporary society people and above all she has highlighted the condition of women of that society where they have to crave for social status and self improvement by marring another person with social status and that makes them Lady. The domination over women is very much explicit.
